Wildlife at Mayureshwar Sanctuary, Pune

Situated at around 70 KMs from Pune, Mayureshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Tehsil Baramati in Pune district. The sanctuary is mostly made up of dry deciduous scrub forest and has a variety of flora and fauna specific to grasslands. Being a very small sanctuary (smallest in India), it can be easily covered in a day and is one of our favourite places for bird-watching as we have come across a good number of bird species as well mammals in the sanctuary. When we came across with the majestic Indian Wolf for the 1st time in December 2015 during one of our bird-watching trip, we got totally mesmerized by the aura of this majestic mammal and of-course its hypnotic stare – a close encounter which will always be memorable. We have been visiting the grasslands around Pune for our regular bird-watching excursions but never came across the Wolf again.. until last Sunday. Read more

It was yet another bird-watching session in Pune outskirts; and again in the arid grassland habitats. Its been around 6-8 months we have been visiting these habitats and we have been pleasantly surprised with the wide variety of wildlife these grasslands have to offer. This time was no different, rather it was our best outing in the grasslands till date as we got blessed by nature to observe the Apex predator of grasslands –  Indian Wolf (Canis lupus pallipes).
