It was the Thanksgiving weekend, which meant a really long weekend and hence time for a long holiday. We planned a road trip this time – driving from Atlanta all the way to New Orleans, covering over 1200 miles in four days as we drove through 5 states – Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Bird-watching at Veer Dam – Pune

Veer Dam is a key bird-watching hotspot around Pune; especially famous for the Bar-headed Geese & Demoiselle Cranes. We have done multiple trips to this place in different seasons and have been pleasantly surprised with some of the sightings at this place. Till date we have sighted over 170 different species of birds at Veer Dam. One of the best parts about this place is that you will get to see Waders, Raptors as well as Flycatchers in and around Veer Dam. Not many places offer such variety.. Located around 70 KMs from Pune, this place offers a good stretch of 7-8 KMs along the river Nira. This entire belt along the river is extremely rich with Avifauna.

A visit to Mayureshwar Wildlife Sanctuary in midst of scorching heat this summer season threw up a pleasant surprise in form of a close encounter with the majestic Short-toed Snake Eagle that will be cherished forever. Weekend trip to Dandeli (Jungle Lodges – Old Magazine House)

The Dushera long weekend was here, and we couldn’t have been more excited. We had planned 2 nights stay at Jungle Lodge resorts – Old Magazine house at Ganeshgudi, Dandeli. This place is around 430 KMs from my place in Pune; so we started pretty early… at 5:00 AM. We drove via Kolhapur and Belgaum. Once you cross Khanapur, you enter the forest area and you will hear birds chirping all around and the coolness in the air. We took a total of 8.5 hours (with two breaks for 30 minutes each) and reach at 1:30 PM. Have to say that the Old Magazine House has a very rustic feel to it and you are actually into the forest. The Old Magazine House has a total of 5 cottages and 1 dormitory (can house 20 people). The staff was super friendly and ensured a seamless check-in. We had reached right at the lunch time; Read more
